The folks at berzerkstudio have released a great new game. The player (as a monster) protects its doomchest of treasure from hoards of would be thieves. After beating the game the player can unlock jennifer.

Trap master offers a player the chance to burn, eat, smash, electrocute, blow up, throw acid on and freeze the thieves in different degrees of satisfying damage. Blood flows as a crunching is heard......swallow the humans to gain energy for your ranged attack, exploding fire balls or green fire spit stuff.

A variety of delightfully sinister traps are available to hinder or kill the pesky humans and their allies trying to steal a monsters beloved doomchest. The traps increase in damage with upgrades.

I have not beaten the game yet, however I created the image above named jennifer on trap master. Rumor has it she is actually a brain with tentacles.

Trap master can be played at king.com were an excellent walkthrough can be found.

Here are a few tips:

1 Eat bigger people for more energy.

2 Keep an eye out for submarines that may sneek up on you while you are busy kicking human ass.

3 Put lots of traps on the doomchest tier. Catapults come on this tier and can be a pain.

4 Save money to upgrade the chest and your monster before going crazy spending money on traps. The time will come when you can set massive traps and sit back and pound a six pack, watching your traps do most of the dirty work.

5 When the wizard comes attack him relentlessly while eating humans when they get in the way.

Hr mageddon has become my personal favorite, among turn based strategy games. Here are a few tips.

1 Gang up! Concentrate on killing one rival at a time. A low health character can still fight, kill them!

2 Some people will try to win by grabbing cubes. Do not worry about them, concentrate on killing. Just make sure they don't get enough cubes to win of course.
If a character is in a cube, surround and murder.

3 Fight with that manager if you have one. When gang assasinating put him in front, then it guys, then secretarys and salesmen. Concentrate all attacks on the one target.

4 Use 'Crack the whip'. My Favorite scenario is when an opponent is getting his ass whipped and thinks he will run away and win by getting cubes. Cracking the whip increases the speed of teamates. Chase those yellow bellies down and stab them in the back and take the cubes they were after.

5 Attack through walls. The it guys server crash and the secretarys paper cuts reach through walls in unexpected places, try it.

6 In bottle neck situations(one lane fighting). Best order manager(or salesmen),it guy, secretarys.

7 If you can, kill the salesmen first. They have the lowest health and have nasty attacks.

8 When trying to take a cube, attack with secretarys first they have a chance to knock the opponent out of the cube with staples.

9 Fight from the coffee rooms when you can, not letting the opponent in.

10 Take advantage of attack bonus from behind by turning the victim with attacks.

HRmageddon from adult swim: a turn-based strategy game where you wage war over office space fighting for every cubicle you can claim. Players hire their own specialized team of employees, take over nearby territory, expand their power, and destroy rivals in brutal business combat.

Controls
This game is controlled by the mouse. Click on a character to bring up a menu of options movement and attacks. Help is available at any time by clicking "Help" at the bottom of the screen or "How to Play" option on the title screen.

Your goal is to take over the office before your rival does. There are two ways to do this:

Control: capturing up cubicles to control the office. Each office map as a defined number of cubes needed to win the game, claim them and you win. Annihilation: Win hrmageddon by killing all of your rivals employees. With no one left alive to oppose you, the office is yours.

Employees:
Your employees are the heart and soul of your organization. You hire them, deploy them, and are ultimately responsible for their death or life in.

Employee stats:
All employees share a few basic attributes that define their abilities and current status.

Health: life force of the employee, when it reaches zero, they die.

Coffee: Employees run on coffee. Each turn employees gain another cup, up to a maximum of five.

Speed: how many tiles and employee can move in a single turn.

Primary attack: every employee has a primary attack that consumes no coffee.

Special: each hr-mageddon employee has unique special powers. These specials consume coffee when used. See the classes section below for details.

Status affects: over the course of the game employees may acquire status affects, bleeding, drunk, etc. these are described in detail in a status affects section below.

Employee classes:

There are four classes of employees in hrmageddon, each with unique powers and abilities.

Salesman:
Salesmen are experts at interfering with enemy progress, their attacks slow or even stop rival employees. Salesmen have the most damaging primary attack, but also have lower health than other classes.

Health: 120.

Speed: seven.

Attack: power slam presentation. One tile range, targets a single enemy, 25 to 30 damage.

two cup special: harassment. One tile range, target single enemy, does 32 to 38 damage. The bad touch it also leaves the victim for rest for two turns, slowing their movement.

4 cup special: flaming Apple empty. 4 tile range, single target, does 12 to 18 damage. Leaves the victim drunk and on fire, causing them to take more damage and lose their next turn.

Passive one: drunken rage. Salesmen with under 25% health, gain plus five bonus to attack, but also suffer a negative three penalty to defense.

It guy, specializes in area of effect attacks which damage multiple enemies. Their primary attack, the mouse flail, is wildly unpredictable in its damage. They have the highest health of all units.

Speed: seven.

Attack: mouse flail. One tile range, targets a single enemy, does five to 38 damage.

2 cup special: server crash. Affects all enemies in a three tile radius doing 20 to 40 damage. All victims also game crashed status of fact, suffering a five attack penalty on their next turn.

4 cup special: firewall of fire. Creates a firewall to read tiles wide, any enemies in the wall take damage immediately. The wall last three turns, and any employee standing in or moving through the wall will take damage.

Passive one: reboot. If it guy takes no action for a turn, no movement or attack, they will gain 10 health at the beginning of their next turn.

Passive 2: security expert. Takes five less damage when being attacked by rabble eight guys.

Receptionist.

The receptionist is the most versatile class. They are the only employee with a range of basic attack, and they have both a single target, an area of a back special. Receptionists are the slowest moving of all employees.

Health: 130.

Speed: six.

Attack: staple gun. 4 tile range, targets a single enemy, does 10 to 30 damage.

2 cup special: cream and sugar. One tile range, target single enemy, does 20 to 25 damage base plus three more for each cup of coffee the victim has currently. The victim also loses 1 cup of coffee.

For cup special: damage of 1000 paper cuts. Three tile range, multiple target, does 20 to 25 damage to all in area. The many paper cuts leave the victims bleeding for two rounds.

Passive one: knock back. The receptionist staple gun as a small chance of knocking its victim act words across the map.

Manager:

The manager is a support expert, with the ability to heal and motivate other employees. Their counterattack makes them the strongest unit on defense.

Health: 130.

Speed: seven.

Attack: Golden pen. One tile range, targets a single enemy, does 20 to 30 damage.

2 cup special: pay raise. For tile range, target single friendly. Restores 30 to 40 health to injured friendly employee.

Passive one: counterpunch. Any time a manager is attack at close range, he will be hit back immediately for 10 to 20 damage.

Passive 2: teambuilding. Any employee standing next to a manager gets plus five defense bonus against all attacks.

Employee status affects.

Status effects get applied to employees over the course of the game from power ups and specials. They are usually temporary. Status affects and bonuses do not stack. Employees will never bleed for more than five turns.

Bleeding: Takes five damage from bleeding at the start turn.

Drunk and on fire: (what a bummer) Take six damage from burning and lose next turn in a drunken stupor.

Demoted: -10 attack penalty.

Harassed: minus two speed.

Motivated: plus 32 speed, plus eight attack bonus.

Promoted: permanent plus 10 attack bonus.

Crashed: minus five attack penalty for one turn.

Office map:

The office map is the field where the game is played. The map is made up of tiles, some of which your employees can move into and others which block their progress. Features that you will see on the office map:

Obstacles: you cannot move into a tile with the obstacle in it, no matter how hard you try.

cubicles: cubicles occupy multiple tiles, but each has a special tile, indicated by an x. Move into this tile, and you'll captured the cubicle, which is your path to winning the game.

Power ups: can be picked up by moving into their tile. Each power up can only be used once.

There are five types of power ups:

Copier: a fully functional copy of your employee, with only one hell.

Transfer: teleport your employee to anywhere on office map.

Holiday bonus: employee is fully healed and motivated for one turn.

Coffee pot: employee coffee level is maxed out at five cuts.

Mystery folder: as a random a fact which may be positive or negative. More likely to be positive, however.

Break room: at the beginning of each turn, any employee standing in the break room games five hell.

Playing the game.

You can play hrmageddon against the computer or against another person.

Single player: when you choose to start a single player game, you'll be asked to select a difficulty level. Normal games will put you on equal terms with the computer player. In hard games that the computer gets more cash to spend on hiring employees.

Multiplayer: when you play multiplier game. You can either join a public game against a random opponent or a private game where you will be given a password to share with a friend.

Employee hiring:

Before the game starts, you will have to hire your division. You can choose any number of employees from the four classes. If you would rather jump in, the pic for me button. Staff up your division for you.

Taking your turn:

hrmageddon is a turn-based game, each player takes turns moving all of their employees on the map. Employees can move and act only once per turn. Here's how your turn will play out:

Move employees: select an employee by clicking on them and click any open tile to get the employee to move to that tile.

Attack or use specials: after moving in employee. The context menu will prompt you to select what you want to do next, attack an enemy, use a special ability, and the employees turned, or undo the move. Any options which are currently unavailable will be played out.

Capture cubicles: moving in employee into the cubicle tile marked with the ex-will capture that cubicle. Every cube you capture will also give you an attack bonus. And turn. Your turn will end when all your employees have acted or when you hit that and turn button. In multiplayer games, there is also a time limit, which will end your turn automatically if you take too long.

Combat.

Combat formula:

Combat hrmageddon uses a special formula,

Attack damage plus all attack bonuses, minus all defense bonuses equals damage done.

Combat bonuses.

The following bonuses and penalties affect the outcome of an attack. Crash. Caused by server crash. Attack penalty.

Demoted: caused by the mystery folder power up, attack penalty.

Drunken rage: happens to salesman when they are under 25% health. Attack bonus and defense penalty.

Motivated: Caused by managers crack the whip and the holiday bonus power up. Attack bonus.

Promoted: caused by the mystery folder power up. Attack bonus.

Team building: bonus granted by standing next to a friendly manager. Defense bonus.

Backstab: bonus granted by attacking from behind. At bonus.

Cube attack bonus: bonus granted by controlling cubes. Attack bonus for each cube controlled.

Cube defense bonus: bonus granted by standing inside a cube. Defense bonus.

Security expert: It guy bonus when attack it by another it guy. Defense bonus.

Heart pounding, first person shooter fun from rasterwerks.

Flying using special commands playing phosphor.

Overview of Weapons in Phosphor:

1 machine gun-Up to 200 rounds, best at short to medium range, rapid fire.

2 pulse gun-As many as 200 electric pulse shots, best at short range, somewhat inaccurate.

3 sniper rifle-Up to 50 rounds, slowest to re-load, best at long range, the most accurate and maybe most damaging gun, right click to adjust
the scope, right click again to deactivate. (my favorite)

4 rocket launcher-Up to 50 rounds, best at medium to long range, aim for the enemy's feet or structure close to them so
they catch the explosion. Make sure not to wound yourself with the rocket launcher by firing into the ground or close structure.

phosphor Shooting/fighting tips.

1 Practice with the different weapons on walls to see patterns.

2 When sniping one can place a shot head high into a wall. Then use the bullet hole as a reference point to hit the opponents
in the melon when they run by.

3 Use the rocket launcher when you can barely see the target, the explosion spreads nicely about.

4 The machine gun seems to work best in close quarters combat. Charge at the bastards while firing at the head.

5 If forced to retreat(low health), run backwards firing the whole time.

6 Get to know the re-spawn areas: Take advantage of the re-birth and take players off guard, also keeps you from getting shot in the back with no warning.

7 Listen to the sounds-This game has great sound effects that one can use for strategic advantage, like someone using the elevator.

8 Good practice place is the 'fan room', were you can get alot of action. Fight for the only armor(that seems to double the shots one can take). And try to shoot
opponents while air born.

9 Players with yellow armor are easy to spot.

How to glitch playing phosphor

Phosphor Dirty tricks

1 Wait by a re-spawn area and shoot em in the back.

2 Hang out by a health pack and pick off the wounded as they go for it.

3 To become invincible press ~ while playing, then type god, then enter, then ~ again.

4 To fly press ~ while playing, then type gravity 10, then enter, then ~ again, then jump(spacebar) while playing.

5 To stop fly mode press ~ while playing, then type gravity 950, then ~ again.

Recommended for playback:
1.6 GHz or faster CPU
64 MB or greater video card

Sin mark is a good game that can be played in less than an hour. You play a demon slaying archer.

1. Try to take out the portals a.s.a.p So no more demons can cross over.

2. Use the fear arrow to keep the demons at bay while you collect runes.

3. Use the bloat arrow to kill the most powerful foes. (It does not work on the dragon.)

4. Raise the dead to help you fight.

5. Use the earth arrow when enemies are clumped together.

6. Scorpions are the hardest to hit, aim for the center of the back.

7. Use the lightning spell on the portal when demons are concentrated around it.

8. To Kill the Dragon at the end shoot the stalagmites above its head and stand your ground as shown below.

Desert rifle

Good old fashioned violence and well done is what desert rifle is about. Shoot them mother flockers with a pistol or shotgun in the head. If you do prefer a rifle, that option is available. A prefered method is to first buy as many land mines as you can. Then buy as many shotgun shells as you can.

Fighting in the desert with a rifle presents many problems like sand getting jammed in the rifle. Don't let them confuse you, when you see a guy shooting at you, kill him. And shoot everyone near the shooter while you do it. Use the suicide guys on the quads to take out the dudes near them, make them there own enemy. When offered upgrades go for the shooting accuracy.

A lich king converts itself into a skeletal creature by means of necromancy, storing its soul in a magical receptacle called a phylactery. In some sources the method of becoming a lich king is referred to as the Ritual of Endless Night. The lich king creation process is often described as requiring the creation and consumption of a deadly potion which is to be drunk on a full moon; although the exact details of the potion are described differently in various sources, the creation of the potion almost universally entails acts of utter evil, such as using as an ingredient the blood of an infant slain by the potential kings own hand, or other, similarly vile components. The potion invariably kills the drinker but if the process is successful he rises again some days later as a lich king. Occasionally, this metamorphosis occurs by accident as a result of life-prolonging magic.

Unlike most other forms of undead creatures, the lich king retains all of the memories, personality, and abilities that it possessed in life — but it has a virtual eternity to hone its skills and inevitably becomes very powerful. Like other powerful forms of undead (such as a vampire or mummy), a lich king has unnatural powers owing to his state. For example, he can put mortals in a paralyzed state of hibernation with a touch, making them seem dead to others, and can, through his typically powerful magical spells, summon other lesser undead to protect him. lich kings can radiate an aura of horror which can send weak-willed would-be foes to flight. The lich king is capable of sustaining tremendous physical damage, and is immune to disease, poison, fatigue and other effects that affect only the living. However, despite all his undead "gifts", a lich kings most valuable resources are his vast intellect, his supreme mastery of sorcery and limitless time to research, plot and scheme.

Since a king's soul is mystically tied to its phylactery, destroying its body will not kill it. Rather, its soul will return to the phylactery, and its body will be recreated by the power keeping it immortal. Thus the only way to permanently destroy a lich king is to destroy the phylactery as well. Therefore, the lich king will generally be extremely protective of the priceless item. The phylactery, which can be of virtually any form (the default form is a metal box filled with rune-covered papers, but it usually appears as a valuable amulet or gemstone), will often be hidden in a secret place and protected by powerful spells, charms, monsters and/or other servants; the phylactery itself is usually of magical nature, meaning its destruction will generally be little easier than attaining it.

Alignment
Depending on the method of becoming a lich king, a lich king can be of any alignment, retaining whatever alignment it had in life.

lich kings are mostly evil but there are references of good lich kings.

The reasons for good beings to become lich kings are limited but most of them come down to unfulfilled quests in life, guardianship over ancient evil and the oversight of future generations.

The process for being a good lich king is more difficult to discover and in many campaign settings does not exist at all. In general, the process of becoming a lich king has very evil requirements possibly making it hard for good people to retain a good alignment.

This brilliant game by the folks at molleindustria.org has three possible endings; nuclear war, getting fired as CEO, or retirement in a no longer oil dependant world(winning). After going through the tutorial and playing the game the following tips should prove helpful. There are many possible formulas that can lead to winning, one of the great attributes to the game.

1. When oiling candidates in a race:
Start pumping cash at the candidate projected to win from about half way in the race. When your candidate wins you get to manipulate world affairs. This can get you in trouble but is alot of fun.

2. When exploiting an area do as much as you can before moving on or bumping up the years.
Suck up the black gold before you get hassled by protesters or native attacks.

3. When starting out pump the land.
Offshore drilling is more expensive and you will be low on cash at first. (The pond in Nigeria drills as land.)

4. Always go for the big wells if you can afford it.
The only time you should use the small pumps is if a large one will not fit in a space, remember you have to hit the oil to pump it.

5. Do not demolish wells that go dry in hostile places.
On the contrary; rebuild them with small pumps for the enemy to attack dummy wells.

6. The human burning plants:
If you don't get fired as CEO or cause megadeath by nuclear war by about the year 2070, the human plant becomes available in the actions bar. When a well starts producing less than 50 bbl demo it and build a human burner. Nobody seems to mind the idea of burning people to make oil as I have never seen one attacked. They can only be built on land.

7. Venezuela:
It seems that succesful exploitation of this land requires political influence. Stick the wells in. > Get an oiled president. > Go through with the special operations until the dot that marks Venezuela on the special ops map disappears(about 6 events that lead up to a coup). > And it is yours to pump dry then build human burners without further concern. Venezuela can be lost.

8. Alaska:
Work it as soon as you can. It takes time and the right president in office to lift the enviro ban. Jump in and drill it dry. No further worries.

9. Texas:
No problems here at all, exploit it all or deal with it after you have a grip on the more difficult lands. YEEH HAW!

10. Nigeria:
Cannot be manipulated through underground politics, direct and timely bribing is required until human burners are available. This place can be expensive if you don't keep an eye on it.

11. Iraq:
A big pain in the butt. One can get involved, go to war and keep sending troops in, or loose it. It seems I was able to get in without changing the regime once and work it but can't remember how. Or you can not work it at all and still retire (not as much fun).When the mercenary option is open to you on the actions bar use them as they are cheap and effective, when kept at full staff (5 per well). Again, when the wells get low install "environment friendly" human burners on every square inch of ground you can.

Halloween's origins date back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced sow-in).

The Celts, who lived 2,000 years ago in the area that is now Ireland, the United Kingdom, and northern France, celebrated their new year on November 1. This day marked the end of summer and the harvest and the beginning of the dark, cold winter, a time of year that was often associated with human death. Celts believed that on the night before the new year, the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead became blurred. On the night of October 31, they celebrated Samhain, when it was believed that the ghosts of the dead returned to earth. In addition to causing trouble and damaging crops, Celts thought that the presence of the otherworldly spirits made it easier for the Druids, or Celtic priests, to make predictions about the future. For a people entirely dependent on the volatile natural world, these prophecies were an important source of comfort and direction during the long, dark winter.

To commemorate the event, Druids built huge sacred bonfires, where the people gathered to burn crops and animals as sacrifices to the Celtic deities.

During the celebration, the Celts wore costumes, typically consisting of animal heads and skins, and attempted to tell each other's fortunes. When the celebration was over, they re-lit their hearth fires, which they had extinguished earlier that evening, from the sacred bonfire to help protect them during the coming winter.

By A.D. 43, Romans had conquered the majority of Celtic territory. In the course of the four hundred years that they ruled the Celtic lands, two festivals of Roman origin were combined with the traditional Celtic celebration of Samhain.

The first was Feralia, a day in late October when the Romans traditionally commemorated the passing of the dead. The second was a day to honor Pomona, the Roman goddess of fruit and trees. The symbol of Pomona is the apple and the incorporation of this celebration into Samhain probably explains the tradition of "bobbing" for apples that is practiced today on Halloween.

By the 800s, the influence of Christianity had spread into Celtic lands. In the seventh century, Pope Boniface IV designated November 1 All Saints' Day, a time to honor saints and martyrs. It is widely believed today that the pope was attempting to replace the Celtic festival of the dead with a related, but church-sanctioned holiday. The celebration was also called All-hallows or All-hallowmas (from Middle English Alholowmesse meaning All Saints' Day) and the night before it, the night of Samhain, began to be called All-hallows Eve and, eventually, Halloween. Even later, in A.D. 1000, the church would make November 2 All Souls' Day, a day to honor the dead. It was celebrated similarly to Samhain, with big bonfires, parades, and dressing up in costumes as saints, angels, and devils. Together, the three celebrations, the eve of All Saints', All Saints', and All Souls', were called Hallowmas.

This game has great graphics and intense, multi-tasking game play. The instructions are straight forward and a well played game is rewarding as it is not that easy to beat (even after defeating the monsters for the first time).

Here are a few tips to a succesful game:

1. 'Stack your defenders'
Place the shorter range defenders in front of the longer ones, at the entrance of the maze. This inflicts a lot of damage on the invading slime bags right out of the gate. i.e. Place a mage in front of an archer and the archer will shoot over the mages head.

2. When you win at the ultimate slots
Don't hit the spin or continue button until you have all the winnings. This is an easy mistake to make at first, because the rest of the game is fast-paced clicking.

3. You must optimize your digging time
Digging is not just an option you must spend every available moment digging for treasure and mana potion.
Do not kill the last creature with a spell until it is about to cross the end-zone, digging to the last possible moment.

4. Use the least ammount of defenders to defeat a wave as possible
This saves money for the next round.

5. Watch your mana level carefully
Don't drink a new mana bottle until you are below 40pts. Use the poison spell on an intruder first. Potions are not accumilitave.

how to sink ships (10 kick butt tips to master the sea with basic access)

Follow these tips to sink any ship with a light sloop the smallest and fastest of the ships available to basic access members. You will become the bane of the seas. Other ships in the privateer section of the game will either scatter if they recognize your ship, gang up on you or occasionally give you a good battle at sea.

1. Hold down the right mouse button to adjust the view and zoom out as far as possible.
Cannot stress this one enough, get the view of your ships broadside and use the mast and cannons like the cross hairs of a gun. If you want to see how many crew members are on an enemy ship run up along it and zoom in. This takes a little practice but is well worth it.

2. Attack from as far away as possible.
While circling the enemy making sure by the time your broadside cannons are reloaded(green circle around icon) you are lined up with the target to hit them again. This method applies for close range battle as well. This makes every shot count, 95% hit ratio or better.

3. Once you fire,run.
Go straight after shooting if you hit them chances are they can hit you if you don't accelerate(by not steering). Keep them in range and just before your cannons are reloaded make the necessary turn to get them in your sites and fire again. Don't over steer!

4. Make them fight your battle.
Pick a target, make them mad by running up on them and blasting them in a full speed 'sail by shooting' and try to get them to follow. Once they are chasing you adjust the view as described in tip #1 to look behind you. Now when your cannons are loaded crank it towards them,fire into the bow(front of ship)and keep running. Most of the time you can zig zag your way out to sea with them in tow hammering them till they sink. If they break off the chase, run them down firing the whole time.

5. When fired upon turn directly into the enemy ship.
This reduces your chances of taking a hit by making you a 'narrower target'. This will also often catch them off guard and you can get another "sail by shot" at them at full speed. Run straight away from cannon fire as well, making your ship much harder to hit than if your broadside is to them.

6. Ignore other light sloops until you have taken out your primary target.
Take out the big threats first. Even though they(light sloops) are as fast and agile as you they rarely pose a serious threat unless loaded with upgraded ammo and crew.

7. When confronted with multiple enemy ships try to make full speed passes between them and shoot two.
Adjust view so you can see both targets and time it so you hit both ships in one pass. This is extremely rewarding when pulled off and most of the time at least one ship will chase you, then use tip #4 to take 'em out.

8. Sneak up behind larger ships, drop your sails after firing the broadsides, man a cannon and hammer away at the ships rear.
Alot of times they will not see you until they turn, then raise your sails and fire your broadside cannons into them as you run away laughing.

9. If you find yourself in a side by side race with an enemy ship at close range.
Just as they pass lower your sails and broadside them, turn and fire the other side. Effectively 'hitting the brakes' and getting two shots in. Before they can regroup your sails are raised and it's full speed ahead.

10. Try to hit the burning part of the ship and it's captain.
Fire into the damaged part of the ship makes the shots more damaging and hitting the captain knocks them down and stuns them for a few seconds.

I have sunk every type of ship and crew with the above strategy. Sometimes wiping out small groups of ships single handed and or they run away. Of course at times I will get sunk by heavily crewed, special weapon toting ships. Make yourself a menace to these ships and hopefully others on your team will help you out. Happy pillaging.

This fun online game a person could get hooked on. The setting is similar to the movie. You design a characters size, sex and shape before taking on the Caribbean in a pirates shoes(or sandals). Kick your way out of jail(you don't die here but put in the jail, closest to were you were defeated in battle. If you loose a battle at sea you return to the jail at the last port you sailed from.)

Now you have a strange world to explore. The British military, undead pirates, giant wasps, alligators, bats and many other dangers face you (the pirate) and your rusty sword the weapon you start with. Later you acquire a gun, voodoo doll and cannons by completing quests assigned to you by various characters in the game. As you complete your quests notoriety is gained and leveling is risen as fights are won.

At many times during the game one may be surrounded by enemies, most of the time it takes provoking to engage in a battle. Simply stay away from the higher level enemies at first to avoid a good swift butt kicking. However much higher level creatures and ships may be defeated when the situation involves more than one pirate. Just gang up on the enemies with your fellow online 'hearties'.

This is were I think I am missing out on a lot of the games design intent, socialization and pirates forming crews. I am not a very social player, helping others only when the situation arises. Occasionally another player will get on my ship and man a cannon.

The high seas...my favorite part of the game. You get two ships one small and one large. I like the small one it seems easier to maneuver during battle. The larger one may be able to inflict and sustain more damage I'm not sure. When engaged in high seas battle right click and hold down to adjust the view of your opponent this is crucial to winning. After sinking the enemy ship you are rewarded with booty. As with normal combat, players can work together. Players cannot harm each other but if you want to fight other gamers online you can do so in a special mode.

I have barely scratched the surface of this interesting game. At level eight I am still a rookie running around this world completing tasks and sinking ships for fun. I have to also mention I am playing the free version, to cheap to spend the five bucks a month for all kinds of upgrades. In summary I give this game a 10.

UPDATED:8/23/08

The game designers have now added an option that allows you to battle other players and crew at sea. One can fight for the French or the Spanish. It's a blast, just when I thought I was done with the game....I'm hooked. Who could resist going after the largest ship and crew and single handedly sink them with the smallest boat on the high seas!

Although a well armed larger ship will win in an all out toe to toe slugfest a person can take down any ship with the light sloop that you recieve(in the beging of the game). Just use your speed advantage and make every shot count on advancing and retreating from the big boys. If you get good at this the enemy will either gang up on you or run when they see your ship leave port. All good pirate fun.

At this year's E3, Microsoft claimed that the Xbox 360 would have the greatest fall lineup ever assembled. With such a bold statement, it's good to know that they have the games to back it up. Although being the best fall lineup ever may be up to the eye of the beholder, there is no denying that the Xbox 360 makes a strong case.

5. Virtua Fighter 5

Virtua Fighter 5 is one of the best, if not the best, 3D fighters ever made. The best aspect about Virtua Fighter 5 is that it is balanced to the nth degree. There are no cheap characters; basically, any of the 17 characters can win a match. Virtua Fighter 5 for the 360 is shaping up to be the best installment yet with an updated version of the game and the inclusion of the ever so addicting online mode.

4. Half-Life 2: The Orange Box

Half-Life 2: The Orange Box is one of the greatest video game compilations ever conceived. Mass Effect has an impressive pedigree. The developer, Bioware, created the excellent Jade Empire and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Like Bioware's other RPGs, expect Mass Effect to have an intriguing story with some amazing dialogue scenes, a deep combat system (it looks to redefine the action-RPG genre by mixing the shooting genre with RPG and strategic elements) and a huge world (an entire galaxy to be exact) to explore. Oh, and Mass Effect looks absolutely incredible.

Unlike the movie industry, blockbuster game releases generally fall toward the end of the year, taking advantage of the season's holiday gift rush to move units. With publishers gearing up for this deluge, June through August tends to be a slower period for gaming enthusiasts. Luckily, there are still a few compelling reasons to stay in the air conditioning during the coming months.
"Wii Fit" (Wii): Too lazy to get a gym membership? You're in luck. Nintendo's next big push to expand gaming further into mainstream culture is Wii Fit, a physical fitness title for their explosively popular console. It contains over 40 different routines, disguised as interactive games to help players become more aware of their bodies and get in shape. The game comes packaged with the Wii Balance Board, a sort of step aerobics platform/scale hybrid that is used for many of the activities. It records mass changes over time, enabling users to track their progress and, like an old arcade game high-score list, provides incentive to continue playing."Metal Gear Solid 4" (PlayStation 3): The latest and supposedly last game in the venerated franchise, "MGS4" is sure to be one of the best titles released this year. This entry features markedly aged series protagonist Solid Snake sneaking through active battlefields and war-torn locales in an effort to stop his murderous twin brother. Director Hideo Kojima has a knack for creating unique, fearless stories and gameplay, making the series one of the industry's most controversial. Several concessions have been made to western design this time around, including a long-overdue, revamped control scheme. Ultimately, Metal Gear Solid's incredible pedigree makes this a sure thing for the series' fans and players looking for something out of the ordinary.

"Ninja Gaiden 2" (Xbox 360): In 2004, the classic 2-D series "Ninja Gaiden" was revived and re-imagined as a modern 3-D action game. Its smooth controls, sharp graphics and punishing difficulty earned a devoted following of hardcore players, leading to several remakes in the following years. Finally, a true sequel is close to release, giving both fans and newcomers a reason to celebrate. Experienced gamers can look forward to new weapons, a deeper and more flexible combat system and even greater numbers of relentless enemies. A regenerating health system and forgiving checkpoints should prove welcome additions to casual players, as will the less intense "Path of the Acolyte" difficulty level. Expect ludicrously proportioned female characters and a nonsensical, pointless plot, but an otherwise great game.

Final Fantasy IV" (Nintendo DS): The revered 1991 Super NES role-playing game (RPG), originally released in America as "Final Fantasy II," gets a complete remake on Nintendo's latest portable system. "Final Fantasy IV" was of the first Japanese RPGs to really attract Western attention to the genre, and its influence can still be felt today. This incarnation features completely redone graphics and music as well as additional content not found in the first title. The original's muddled script, which unnecessarily confused the story for countless gamers, has also been retranslated to make better sense of the dialogue. The mechanics and plot may seem somewhat quaint by modern standards, but role-playing fans and gamers interested in history should check out this remixed classic.

"Alone in the Dark" (PS3, PS2, 360, PC, Wii): One of the pioneering survival-horror gaming franchises, "Alone in the Dark," has had some problems staying relevant in recent years. The story centers on Edward Carnby, hero of the original game, who travels to Central Park to investigate reported supernatural activity. Developer Eden Games has placed an emphasis on creative problem-solving by implementing a robust item interaction system. For example, using a combat knife on blood pack will cause it to leak, allowing players to create a trail of blood to lead enemies to a desired location. If this sort of flexibility plays out through the entire game, "Alone in the Dark" will be worth a look from gamers in search of thoughtful, cerebral horror. © 2008 Tufts Daily

WoW Quests and Realms

Quests

Quests in WoW are tasks given to PCs by NPCs. The completion of quests provides many different rewards to the player, including reputation, experience, items, and gold. There are a variety of quests available, from single objective tasks to epic multi-step endeavors. Currently (BC-patch 2.4) there are more than 2000 quests in World of Warcraft.

Realms

World of Warcraft uses server clusters (known as "realms") to allow players to choose their preferred gameplay type and to allow the game to support as many subscribers as it does. There are four types of realms: Normal (also known as PvE or player versus environment), PvP (player versus player), RP (a roleplaying Normal/PvE server) and RP-PvP (roleplaying PvP server):

Normal
On the Normal (also know as PvE, Player versus Environment) realms throughout most of the world players cannot attack or be attacked by each other, except by actively enabling the character's PvP flag, attacking a PvP-flagged character, entering a "PvP Territory" (such as a Battleground) or an enemy faction Capital City, or casting a positive spell on a friendly PvP-flagged character. The PvP flag is removed after 5 minutes from the last PvP action. If the PvP flag was enabled using the command the player will need to turn it off using the same command and then avoid PvP combat for 5 minutes.
PVP (Player versus Player)
On a PvP realm, players are flagged for PvP by default. This flag is only disabled when a character is in a friendly faction city or a zone dedicated to newly created characters. All other zones are considered "contested territory" where players are automatically flagged for PvP upon entering. Most players will not need to enter a contested zone until roughly level 20.
On PvP servers, a player is limited to creating characters on one faction. This is in contrast to PvE servers, where a player may create characters from both factions.
The PvP servers also feature a more "hands–off" approach to server policies, facilitating the state of open war in these servers. Thus, The in-game GMs will deal with PvP related offenses differently than on the PvE realms, and some player actions are allowed to occur.[17] These actions include, but are not limited to, corpse camping, ganking, and other PvP related sections of Blizzard's harassment policy.
RP (Roleplaying)
The roleplaying servers use the same ruleset as PvE realms, with the exception that players must act and behave in character, and must follow "naming rules" when they name their character. On these realms, players act and speak as their characters would, and anything said out of character is usually preceded by "OOC:" or presented in ((double parentheses)). It is also against the rules to be off-topic in all public channels, such as General and Trade.[18]
RP-PvP (Roleplaying Player versus Player)
The roleplaying PvP realms are an extension to the role-playing realms that use the PvP ruleset instead of the Normal (PvE) ruleset. Blizzard did not initially have this server type when the game was launched; it was added later.[19]
Public test realm
A public test realm, also called a test server, is used to test features in development for the next patch. Players can copy a character to the test realm or can sometimes copy a premade character. Players on test realms may encounter character wipes, item wipes, or frequent downtime to make changes or apply patches.
Users may have up to ten characters per realm and up to a maximum of fifty characters per account.[20] Characters can be moved between realms in the same region (e.g., from one European server to another, but not from a European server to an American one) for a fee.

Items and equipment

Player characters can acquire various "items" in the game, which can aid in character customization, or which can otherwise be of aid to them. Items can vary from resources such as herbs or raw ores to items to be retrieved for quests. Player characters can also equip different weapons and armor, either to customize their character or to improve abilities (such as better attack or defense skills). Items improve character effectiveness to such a degree as to make acquisition of these items necessary and highly desirable for progression. World of Warcraft’s item mechanics are complex and have undergone many changes in an attempt to keep the system balanced. Items play a significant role in the outcome of all confrontations within the game and a character’s effectiveness is directly linked to the quality of gear currently equipped. After the release of the World of Warcraft Trading Card Game, players could redeem codes found on "loot cards" for in-game items.

One of the more notable items are "mounts", which are items or spells which, when activated, summon an animal or machine which increase the character's land movement speed. In the expansion pack The Burning Crusade, the ability to purchase or acquire flying mounts became available in the expansion areas. Each playable race can use a certain mount type strongly associated with their race.

Professions

During the course of playing the game, players may choose to develop side skills for their character(s). These non-combat skills are called professions. Professions are divided into two categories, primary and secondary.

Primary professions are skills related to the creation and enhancement of weapons and armor, and can be subdivided into gathering and crafting professions. The gathering professions in WoW are herbalism, mining, and skinning. Crafting professions include blacksmithing, leatherworking, tailoring, alchemy, engineering, enchanting, jewelcrafting (added in The Burning Crusade expansion), and inscription (to be added in the Wrath of the Lich King expansion). Crafting professions also have specialization categories that when trained, allow for more diverse items to be created, depending on the character's direction in the game. There is also the Enchanting profession, which allows a character to enchant weapons and armor, and also disenchant magical items in his or her possession. A character is limited to two primary professions.

Secondary professions are skills that serve to enhance the player's experience and self-sufficiency. The secondary professions are first aid, cooking, and fishing. Characters can learn all three secondary professions. The Rogue class has two unique secondary professions: poisons and lock-picking.

PvP rankings

Upon defeating another player of the opposite faction in player versus player (PvP) combat the victor earns "Honor Points". Some servers allow for unrestricted PvP in most areas of the game, while others restrict this so-called "world PvP" to voluntary action only. All players also may choose to participate in the Battlegrounds - areas designed for multiplayer combat. In addition to honor points, the losing team in a Battleground receives one "mark of honor", while the winning team earns three marks. Honor Points and marks may be spent as currency to purchase various rewards like armor, weapons and mounts. Prior to patch 2.0.1, significant PvP achievements would allow characters to display various titles. After the patch new titles are no longer available, however previously earned titles can still be displayed.

The Arenas, added in The Burning Crusade, offer gladiator-like combat in a World of Warcraft setting. The Arenas have a separate system from the Battlegrounds. Instead of honor, the Arenas give "Arena Points" which can be spent to purchase items in a manner similar to Honor Points. Only level 70 players can participate in rated arena matches. Lower level players can participate in practice arena matches, or "skirmishes", but no arena points are awarded.

The Arena system is broken into seasons. World of Warcraft (commonly known as WoW) is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG). It is Blizzard Entertainment's fourth game set in the fantasy Warcraft universe, which was first introduced by Warcraft: Orcs & Humans in 1994.World of Warcraft takes place within the world of Azeroth, four years after the events at the conclusion of Blizzard's previous release, Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne. Blizzard Entertainment announced World of Warcraft on September 2, 2001.The game was released on November 23, 2004, celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Warcraft franchise. It is currently the world's largest MMORPG in terms of monthly subscribers. World of Warcraft currently holds 62% of the MMOG market at 10 million subscribers. The current subscriber base for all MMOGs is 16 million.

The first official expansion pack of the game, The Burning Crusade, was released on January 16, 2007. During the 2007 BlizzCon event, Blizzard announced a second expansion pack called Wrath of the Lich King on August 3, 2007. The release date of Wrath of the Lich King has not been announced.
Gameplay
Unlike previous games in the Warcraft series, World of Warcraft is a MMORPG, not a real-time strategy game. As with other MMORPGs, people control a character avatar within a persistent game world, exploring the landscape, fighting monsters, performing quests, building skills, and interacting with NPCs, as well as other players. The game rewards success with in-game money, items, experience and reputation, all of which in turn allow players to improve their skill and power. Players can level up their characters from level one to level 60, level 70 if they have The Burning Crusade expansion. Upon release of the Wrath of the Lich King expansion, players will be able to attain level 80 after purchasing the expansion.In addition, players may opt to take part in battles against other players of an enemy faction, in PvP battlegrounds or in normal world zones subject to the rules in place on the particular server. Duels can also be fought between members of the same or opposing factions, although these do not provide tangible rewards. Many players also choose to join guilds. Short-term parties and raid groups can be formed to conduct raids against enemy territories and instances.
Characters
There are two types of characters: Player Characters (PCs, or simply "players") and Non-Player Characters (NPCs). A Player Character is an avatar in the game environment that is controlled by a player, whilst Non-Player Characters are controlled by the game software and can only interact with PCs through scripted events or artificial intelligence (AI). There are three types of NPCs. Friendly NPCs cannot attack friendly characters and vice versa. Hostile NPCs are either of the opposing faction or are mobs (enemies controlled by AI) and will freely attack any PC with whom they are hostile. Neutral NPCs will only attack if provoked. Some NPC interaction is affected by the reputation a PC has with them.

NPCs in major and minor cities can buy and sell merchandise, train class and profession skills, give quests and provide a large number of services that are needed in the game. While some will merely offer advice or further the story, others, such as city guards, patrol around set paths to keep cities defended against attacking PCs or hostile NPCs that may attempt to invade. Guards can also provide directions to common locations within their city.

When creating a character in World of Warcraft, the player can choose from ten different races in two factions: Alliance and Horde. Race determines the character's appearance, starting location, and initial skill set, called "racial traits".

The Alliance currently consists of Humans, Night Elves, Dwarfs, Gnomes and Draenei.
The Horde currently consists of Orcs, Tauren, Undead, Trolls and Blood Elves.
Draenei and Blood Elf characters were introduced in The Burning Crusade, and require that expansion in order to be created.

In addition to the ten playable races, there are many NPC races including (but not limited to) Goblins, Ogres, Murlocs, and Naga.

Classes
The game has nine character classes that a player can choose from, though not all classes are available for each race. Each class has a set of unique abilities and talents. Abilities are general skills and spells available to the entire class, while talents allow players to specialize their character and further refine their role. Each class has a set of three talent trees. Depending on class, players may choose to build their character's talent trees for damage-dealing (also called damage-per-second, or DPS), healing, tanking, or a mix of these. Some classes, known as "hybrid classes," are able to perform different roles depending on a group's needs.

The nine available classes in World of Warcraft are:

Druid (Hybrid class)
A nature-oriented class capable of fulfilling the role of damage-dealer, tank, or healer. The druid can shape-shift into many forms to increase its combat or movement abilities, including a bear (for tanking), a sea lion (for water travel), a Lion/Panther form (Horde/Alliance) for damage-dealing, and a cheetah (for outside land travelling). Through specialization of the character, other forms are also available. In humanoid form, the druid can cast a variety of healing or damaging spells.
Hunter (Ranged damage class)
A combination of a marksman/archer and animal specialist, the hunter specializes in ranged damage dealt by means of a bow, crossbow, or gun with the help of an animal pet. The hunter also employs a series of traps for damaging or disabling enemies.
Mage (Spell damage class)
The wizard-esque damage-dealer of World of Warcraft, the mage employs spells of the "arcane", fire, and frost elements. They have minimal armor. Mages can also conjure food and water to replenish group members, and teleport themselves and others to most major cities.
Paladin (Hybrid class)
A heavily armored holy warrior. Like druids, paladins can specialize to fulfill each of the three major roles in World of Warcraft. (See also: Paladin (character class).)
Priest (Healer/Spell damage class)
A lightly armored class that can protect and heal allies (with "Holy" spells) or bring harm to enemies (with "Shadow" spells).
Rogue (Melee damage class)
A shadowy assassin that can "stealth" to avoid being seen by enemies (providing near-invisibility). The rogue deals damage by dual-wielding small mêlée weapons, and also provides traditional thief skills like lock-picking, pickpocketing, and poisoning.
Shaman (Hybrid class)
Unlike other hybrid classes (paladins and druids), the totem-wielding shaman's tanking abilities are quite limited. However, they can specialize to become effective healers, or damage dealers using either mêlée weapons or spells.
Warlock (Spell damage class)
A sinister combination of the mage and the hunter, the warlock deals magical damage like a mage, but also has demonic "pets" (called minions) like hunters. Depending on their specialization, the warlock's damaging spells can come chiefly in the form of "damage over time" spells that, after being placed on an enemy, slowly deal damage, or in the form of direct damage spells that deal damage all at once, as those of a mage or shaman do.
Warrior (Tank/melee damage class)
A heavily armored class, the warrior is a general mêlée fighter who can wield any non-magical weapon in the game.
The Paladin class was previously only available to the Alliance, and the Shaman only available to the Horde. Now, with the release of The Burning Crusade, the Draenei (Alliance) are able to be shamans and the Blood Elves (Horde) are able to be paladins, removing the previous faction exclusivity. Is It Possible to Surpass World of Warcraft?

With the interactive entertainment world’s attention about to turn to the new console systems, we thought this month we’d instead take a look at one of the most successful PC game products ever, World of Warcraft (WoW). WoW is of course, a subscription-based massively multiplayer online game (MMOG). What makes the product unique is not necessarily the number of users, but the number of users that are willing to pay up to $15 a month to play the game. The game has raised the bar for MMOG products, particularly in terms of revenue generation. However, there are some fundamental misconceptions about the game that are particularly problematic. In the end, it is a great game that has perhaps recalibrated investor expectations for MMOG products beyond what makes sense. There is a lot of supposedly new talk about the “World of Warcraft model”. To longtime industry observers, this talk is more retro (or even tired) than it is revolutionary. We have heard this tune before, only where the lyrics once featured EverQuest, now they sing World of Warcraft. Still, WoW developer Blizzard Entertainment obviously did something right and it only seems natural to ask what it was. It is only after understanding how Blizzard made WoW a success that companies can ask such questions as: is that success duplicable and if so is our particular company in a position to duplicate that success?

First, however, it is important to debunk a persistent myth about WoW’s success. The confusion results from WoW’s status as a truly global game. We know, from the game’s Chinese operator the9, that Warcraft has 5 million Chinese players. Of course, this is a terrific feat as WoW became the first Western game to penetrate the dense and difficult Chinese market. However, these Chinese users are not subscribers in the Western sense of the word: they do not pay a recurring monthly fee. In fact, they generate about 0.36 yuan per hour of gameplay; that’s about 4 cents an hour. Of course, Chinese users log a lot of hours. In the second quarter of 2006, World of Warcraft generated $32 million. While this is a substantial sum in the Chinese MMOG world, 5 million Western subscribers would have generated more than $200 million over the same time period. Thus, Chinese players generate about 15% as much revenue as their Western neighbors.

What we know for sure is that World of Warcraft has had one million North American subscribers and one million European subscribers for a total of over two million Western subscribers. This, in and of itself, is an astounding feat. No game had been able to top 750,000 subscribers in those territories, let alone one million or two million. It is important, however, to remember that in terms of revenue generation, World of Warcraft is just one star among the many high-flying video games with millions of unit sales. For example, popular Electronic Arts franchises like Madden football and Need for Speed can sell over 5 million units a year at around $50 each. In addition, because World of Warcraft is a massively complicated online game, the cost structure is far different from a Madden or Need for Speed. WoW costs more to run and new content must be continuously added. The game generates more revenue per user, but costs per user are substantially higher than with traditional game products.

Nevertheless, a product like WoW is tremendously profitable and its success in the West did come as a bit of a surprise. To most outsiders, WoW looks pretty much like any other high-end fantasy MMOG. Did World of Warcraft actually change the MMOG template that products like EverQuest established or did it merely perfect the player experience for the genre? From the gameplay perspective, World of Warcraft made evolutionary changes to the MMOG. Namely, Blizzard made WoW a lot more like a traditional game. Taking the template as a starting point, WoW made it easier to play the game alone and/or without “making new friends”. Research by a group of researchers at the Palo Alto Research Center suggests that the majority of WoW players spend most of their time playing alone. Very few have dense or large online social networks. In other words, like most traditional videogame and PC players, they are playing by themselves or with a couple of friends.

Unlike some games which force players to cooperate, WoW facilitates the go-it-alone mode of gameplay. A good deal of the action in World of Warcraft does not occur within the massively multiplayer setting where there are hundreds to thousands of people. Many quests allow the player to enter into an “instance” which is a sort of parallel universe in which the player and whatever group they are part of leave the main gameworld and enter a “court” of their own. Instancing, as it is known, is a controversial practice among the hard-core MMOG crowd because it breaks the illusion of the game as one seamless “virtual world”. On the other hand, it allows players greater control of their individual experience and reduces server overhead and lag. The practice also allowed Blizzard to provide direction for player versus player (PvP) gameplay. The normal MMOG focuses primarily on player versus environment (PvE) experience where a user goes on a “quest” and focuses on fighting computer generated monsters and building their character level. With PvP players fight each other. For WoW, Blizzard introduced “Battlegrounds” about 6 months after the original game release. These are essentially minigames that are almost like the “Deathmatches” from first person shooter (FPS) type games. In the first Battlegrounds release, there were an epic game with up to 40 players and a “Capture-the-Flag” 20 player match. The battles also provided a much needed boost to the factional strife that World of Warcraft fosters between the game universe’s races, the Alliance and the Horde.

Both the PvE and PvP instanced content has proven incredibly popular even as it has led to derisive commentary from MMOG purists. It appears to us that instanced content lets Blizzard formalize some of the way users play MMOG. For years, different play styles led to social problems among players who were following different implicit rules. Also, many users are not attracted to a purely open-ended game. Some players want clear winners and losers as in an FPS or sports game. Now, people who like PvP battles can engage in those in their own arena while PvE players can hang out in the auction house. This has enabled World of Warcraft to draw players who would normally be classified as moderate gamers, the types who play Counter-Strike, Call of Duty, or Battlefield.

Instancing and support for solo players, however, are not limited to World of Warcraft. Many other games provide the same types of play to various degrees. A great deal of WoW’s success can probably be attributed to the elusive “fun” factor. So is it simply about building another product that consumers find to be fun? Developing an online game with the quality of WoW is probably within the reach of several companies, assuming they have around $25 to $50 million to invest in creating a well-designed fun game. However, having a high-quality, fun product was only one part of WoW’s unprecedented success. There are several other key factors that will be much harder to duplicate. Blizzard’s global execution was based on years of experience and backed with very strong brand recognition. The foundation for WoW’s success was started years before actual product development commenced.

World of Warcraft is the first truly global online game. At least as impressive as the game’s success in China is its more than 1 million customers in Europe. No other MMOG has even claimed 100,000 European subscribers. Blizzard actually treated Europe like a different market that needed its own operations staff, etc. They released the game in German and French in addition to English and have a Spanish version planned. Blizzard Europe has 450 employees with 22 nationalities represented among them. No other online game company has even half of that presence in Europe except Jagex, the British developer of Runescape.

Blizzard was able to launch a product on a global basis because they had years of experience with releasing and operating online games around the world. For example, Blizzard’s StarCraft title helped kick start the entire South Korean game market in the late 1990s. Blizzard’s decade long experience with its free Battle.net online game service was clearly a major factor in WoW’s success. Most online game developers have had mere thousands or at best tens of thousands of users. Blizzard was used to dealing with hundreds of thousands of users on a daily basis. This type of large-scale operations experience cannot be underestimated. In China, companies like the9 take a substantial cut of revenue solely for their expertise in running these immensely complicated enterprises. WoW did not come out of nowhere and was the result of years of experience. This type of experience is probably impossible to duplicate.

Finally of course there is Blizzard’s reputation and the brand strength of Warcraft. Blizzard’s franchises like Warcraft, StarCraft and Diablo were among the most popular PC games of all time. Blizzard is definitely a company well-known for quality of product not quantity. They are a company with a reputation for taking the time to get things right. For example, it took over six years between the release of Warcraft II and Warcraft III. Furthermore, Blizzard, at the time of WoW’s release, was probably the most respected online gaming company in the world. Through years of supporting online games at Battle.net with a high level of service, the company was known as responsive to player desires and just plain good at running online games. Unlike many game company brands, Blizzard had proven its international appeal with massive popularity of StarCraft in Asia, particularly outside Japan. Blizzard even had some indirect benefit from piracy. Warcraft games were some of the most popular pirated games in China and other parts of Asia and this lead to strong brand recognition.
All of these factors point towards one conclusion: World of Warcraft’s success, admirable as it may be, will be extremely difficult to duplicate. This will be bad news for all the frothy investors who are suddenly discovering the MMOG business model. In the new DFC Intelligence Online Game Market report we forecast revenue in the MMOG market to grow over 150% from 2006 to 2011. However, this doesn’t account for all the investment money that is likely to be lost chasing after that revenue growth. After EverQuest’s success over five years ago, millions of dollars flowed into the MMOG industry, far beyond what it could support. The fact of the matter is that most success with MMOG comes with smaller, dedicated online game companies that use small amounts of investment money to great effect. Jagex’s Runescape, CCP’s EVE Online, and Three Rings’ Puzzle Pirates are three games that found niche success by scaling their efforts to what was feasible. Jagex’s Runescape has even crossed into mainstream territory with over 800,000 subscribers as a result of its less demanding computer requirements and low cost ($5 a month). This is another example of how innovation with gameplay and business models tends to produce hits. For the health of investors and the MMOG space, let’s hope that this lesson doesn’t have to be relearned the hard way. However, when a product generates as much money as WoW it is inevitable that the dumb money will start flowing freely. Just don’t say we didn’t warn you.

Stepping off a boat in the shoes of illegal immigrant Niko Bellic as he arrives in Liberty City at the start of Grand Theft Auto IV, you can tell immediately that Rockstar North's latest offering is something quite special. Yes, this is another GTA game in which you'll likely spend the bulk of your time stealing cars and gunning down cops and criminals, but it's also much more than that. GTAIV is a game with a compelling and nonlinear storyline, a game with a great protagonist who you can't help but like, and a game that boasts a plethora of online multiplayer features in addition to its lengthy story mode. It's not without some flaws, but GTAIV is undoubtedly the best Grand Theft Auto yet.

Liberty City has changed a lot since 2001.
One of the many things that set GTAIV apart from its predecessors is Liberty City, which is more convincing as a living, breathing urban environment than anything that you've seen in a video game preview before, and bears little resemblance to its namesake in 2001's GTAIII. Liberty's diverse population believably attempts to go about its daily business, seemingly unaware that several criminal factions are at war in the city. Niko has no such luck. He's compelled to start working for one of the factions shortly after arriving, when he learns that his cousin Roman has some potentially fatal gambling debts. Niko's military experience makes him a useful freelancer for employers in the business of killing each other, and though his reluctance to carry out their orders is often apparent, he does whatever is asked of him in the hope that completing missions for other people will ultimately give him the means to complete his own.

Actually, Niko doesn't have to do everything that is asked of him. On several occasions as you play through his story, you'll be presented with decisions that afford you the option of doing what you think is right rather than blindly following instructions. You don't necessarily have to kill a target if he or she promises to disappear, but you have to weigh the risk of your employer finding out against the possibility that the person whose life you spare might prove useful later in the game, or even have work for you in the form of bonus missions. To say anything more specific on this subject would be to risk spoiling one of GTAIV's most interesting new features, but suffice it to say that every decision you make has consequences, and you'll likely want to play through the game at least twice to see how the alternatives unfold.

Grand Theft Auto IV's story mode can be beaten in less than 30 hours, and there are so many optional activities and side missions to take part in along the way that you can comfortably double that number if you're in no hurry. The majority of the story missions task you with making deliveries and/or killing people, and play out in much the same way as those in previous games. With that said, most of the missions are a lot easier this time around, partly because Niko is a more agile and efficient killer than any of his predecessors, and partly because the LCPD seemingly has better things to do than hunt down an illegal immigrant who's gunning down undesirables all over the city. Some of the more imaginative missions sprinkled throughout the story include a kidnapping, a bank heist, and a job interview. The cinematic cutscenes associated with story missions are superbly presented and are the sequences in which the game's characters really shine. Without exception, the characters you encounter benefit from great animation, great voice work, and superbly expressive faces. They're not always so impressive when they join you on a mission and refuse to do what they're supposed to (for example, not following you on an escort mission, or failing to negotiate a doorway). Nevertheless, these problems are few and far between, and they're made less painful by the new "replay mission" option that you're presented with whenever you fail.

My Story

So I was playing this new shooter last week and I found a bug, when I switch from one gun to another while swimming, the first gun gets dropped. I emailed the developers, who emailed the project leaders -- who emailed me back saying "oops" and "thanks."

The week before that I got 2 free copies of games that hit stores next month. I've already passed one of those games though, so I sold the full version to my brother. I used to go out and buy games and pay monthly subscriptions to play those games online... and now I go to school, I come home and I have games waiting for me in the mail months before they get released.

I "work" with unreleased games about 4 hours a day, sometimes less, and my checks blow away what I used to get making coffee for others.

The Imitators

It wasn't always like this though. I'd go to school, go to work at a coffee shop, come home late, play games, wake up tired, and repeat everything the next day. On top of that, I also had to save up to buy games, pay monthly subscriptions to play those games, and spend hours looking for cheat codes and guides.

One day I found a website that promised me that I would play games online and get paid for it. The site charged $59.99 for the information. So I paid. After I paid I found that the site was such garbage, it was ridiculous... But the seed had been planted.

The Search & The Guide

I started doing my own research and looking for jobs that would pay me to test and play games. It took me 6 months and a lot of trial and error -- mostly error. But I documented my adventures and the sites I used.

The thing about these jobs is that the more people you tell, the more people you have to compete with when these companies hire. So like an ancient scroll I thought about burying my guide, not letting anyone ever see it. But, my friends and my conscience convinced me to share the guide.

There was no way I was going to give away 6 months worth of research. I thought about selling it for $199 so that no one would buy it, but I decided against it. I gave $99 a chance, but my friends complained... "what if it was you" they said. So I finally settled on a variable length membership, starting at $39.95. I think that is HIGHLY fair.

So this is my brief-story (my life-story I will not share). My guide will show you the sites that I used to find jobs that pay for game testing; I've done the trail blazing for you, so that you can save your time.

So here's a recap and some frequently asked questions:

1. Why would companies pay me to beta test games?

The game industry is now over a $50 billion dollar business. In the case of nationwide companies, producing games that have bugs in them -- games that the customers will return, means losing millions of dollars, and likely jobs.

If you buy a new MMORPG that crashes every time your character jumps while running, chances are you will not like the game and tell all of your friends not to buy it. This is a serious setback for the game company. The customers that bought their product will not buy it again and neither will their friends. This company now will have invested millions of dollars in game development, manufacturing, shipping, and marketing costs but no one will buy their game because of one glitch.

What if a game company creates a new way to play online, but it's just too complicated? This is a serious setback, the company executives might of thought that the this new system was "cool" but in fact, from the gamer's perspective, there's nothing "cool" about trying to figure out how to login to play the game online. Again, no one will buy this game and the manufacturing company will lose millions!

2. What, programmers can't catch all the glitches?

The answer is NO -- programmers are not necessarily gamers, they won't find all the bugs that a gamer will. If a company pays you $40/hr to play games and find glitches for them that would otherwise ruin the game experience for the user, and possibly hurt their sales, from their perspective it's really a good deal.

3. What kind of games will I beta test?

It will depend on the company, but all these games have been tested before release: Crysis, Bioshock, Call of Duty 4, The Witcher, and the Age of Conan.

4. Can I still go to school, or work my 9-5 job, what about Education requirements?

Most testing jobs don't require formal education.
You get paid up to $120 per hour. This will depend on your effort, knowledge, and experience.
Some jobs are 9-5, while others are test whenever you want; you will apply for the jobs that you like.
The only hard requirement is that you need to be 18 years of age or older.

5. Can I test games on the XBOX 360, PS2, PS3, PSP, Nintendo DS, Gameboy, etc?

This will depend on the job that you land. If you only want to test games on the XBOX ONLY then your employment opportunities will obviously be limited. You will apply for jobs that you like and test on whatever system that you wish to test on.

It's all about Speed

Other guide makers make you follow a written guide with coordinates while the MapMod simply points our coordinates or npc locations. But that meant you had to constantly alt+tab to read the guide then enter back into the game to find the locations you were supposed to go to. It was stressful, time consuming, and most people gave up using the guides all together!

We wanted to change all that. We wanted to eliminate the dreaded alt+tab and provide our members with a program that had all the information they will ever need right inside their game!

How Does It Work

MapMod v2 is very simple to use. On your Ironforge map there is a "Leveling Directory" which will tell you the best place to quest for your current level.

For this example we will pretend your level 10. After looking at the Ironforge Directory you will see you need to head to Loch Modan.

After traveling to Loch Modan you will now see a list of steps going down the right side of your map, each will give you directions on what quests to get and the order to complete them. Just go down the list of steps and complete them one by one and before you know it you'll be one level higher!

As you can see, placing the entire guide within this addon didn't hurt the quality of the guide at all. In fact, while we were making this we decided to add additional tips and techniques to help you get through them faster and easier.
